Is Apple's iOS update policy actually beneficial for average users?

Theoretically, new versions bring security improvements and new features, but they also often require more powerful devices and can cause compatibility issues with older apps. Do you think Apple's update policy is balanced for most users, or do you feel they prioritize innovation at the expense of stability?
