In recent years, facial recognition systems used in smartphones have become quite popular. What are your general thoughts on how these systems process data, their storage methods, and potential security vulnerabilities? What specific measures should be taken, especially regarding risks like fake identities and data leaks? In your opinion, how does this technology compare to other biometric solutions like fingerprint scanning?

Last year I got a new phone and started using facial recognition to unlock it. At first I thought, "Wow, this is so fast," but one evening a friend got close enough to show a photo on my computer and the phone unlocked instantly. That’s when I realized that without 3D depth sensors, the system is just relying on a 2D photo—so spoofing is a real risk. That’s why I kept the fingerprint reader active too; fingerprints still seem to give fewer false positives. As for how companies store data, I think facial data should stay only on the device in an encrypted “Secure Enclave” and never be backed up to the cloud. If any backup is made, the data needs to be anonymized and wrapped in an extra layer of encryption. To boost security, “liveness detection” is a must—things like depth cameras or IR sensors. Bottom line: facial recognition is convenient but not enough on its own; pairing it with multi-factor biometrics like fingerprints makes the whole system much more robust.
