What are everyone's thoughts on the system compatibility, performance, and long-term value of older mobile devices? In today's fast-evolving app ecosystem, can old devices still meet daily needs, and is it worth keeping or upgrading them?

As mobile operating systems and apps update more frequently, compatibility and performance of older smartphones have become hot topics. Do system updates cause older devices to lag? Can security patches still be delivered in time? In daily use scenarios, can old devices still meet basic needs like chatting, browsing, and video watching? Additionally, considering environmental protection and resource utilization, is it more valuable to keep using old devices rather than replacing them frequently? How do people balance these factors in actual use? Are there any good plans or tips to extend the lifespan of devices? Feel free to share your experiences and opinions.

I bought that old Android phone back in 2016, originally just as a backup device, but after two years of use, system updates started causing lag. The first time I flashed an official OTA update, CPU usage shot up to 90%, and chat apps opened so slowly it felt like loading a webpage. Later, I decided to flash a third-party ROM—a lightweight AOSP-based system—and disabled unnecessary animations and background services. I also TRIM-optimized the system partition, and the lag basically disappeared. Now, daily chatting, browsing, and even watching 720p videos run smoothly. Battery degradation was another issue, so I replaced the original battery with a used one of similar capacity, restoring battery life to about half of what it was. The investment was far cheaper than buying a new phone. To extend its lifespan, I reduced system updates to once every six months, keeping only security patches to avoid frequent compatibility issues. On the app side, I use lightweight browsers and ad-free chat clients, regularly clear cache, and disable auto-sync. This keeps basic needs covered while reducing e-waste—balancing performance and eco-friendliness. Overall, as long as the hardware can still handle basic tasks, proper system tweaking and hardware maintenance can keep an old device running for years.
