The pros and cons of jailbreaking are always up for debate. Security vulnerabilities, update issues, stability problems—there’s a lot to consider. But on the flip side, you get unmatched customization options and access to features Apple doesn’t officially allow. So, do you think jailbreaking is a necessity or just an unnecessary risk? What’s the biggest hurdle holding you back?

iPhone doesn’t have root access, so if you want to customize everything like you can on Android, you’re stuck with default settings. It reminds me of old Windows Mobile days—having to deal with pre-installed junk instead of just removing what you don’t want. On Android, I tweak my home screen endlessly with Nova Launcher, but on iOS, even simple changes usually require a jailbreak. Of course, that comes with risks—most people who tried jailbreaking iOS 17 ended up bricking their devices. It’s kind of like flashing AOSP-based ROMs on Android: total freedom, but also a chance of turning your phone into a paperweight. Take AdGuard, for example—it won’t work without root or sideloading, and even if you bypass DNS restrictions, there’s always a trade-off. I don’t see jailbreaking as a necessity; it’s just a tool that works for some people. At the end of the day, it’s all about what fits your needs.

The core benefits of jailbreaking are actually confined to a very narrow area. Due to iOS's sandbox structure and restrictive permission system, there's no real chance for significant customization without diving deep into the system—beyond what's already offered in the rewarded interfaces. For example, the idea that you need a jailbreak to change your system font starting from iOS 16 is completely a myth—it's now possible to lightly modify Apple's interface using third-party tools. When it comes to stability, there's always the risk of sending your device into recovery mode after every jailbreak; even non-persistent jailbreaks like TrollStore can suddenly cause a bootloop. For most users, sticking with a stable iOS version is the smarter choice rather than tinkering with system files. On the current threats front, in 2023, nearly 90% of jailbreaks based on the Checkm8 exploit were immediately patched by Apple. This means that before new jailbreak tools emerge, users often go through months-long "corona jailbreak periods." The risks that stand out usually stem from Cydia Substrate being far less updated than before: for instance, tweaks that worked stably in older jailbreaks now cause conflicts in the system, with tweak errors ranking in the top three spots in crash reports. Ultimately, while jailbreaking offers only aesthetic and narrowly focused innovations, the stability, security, and update issues you might face nearly erase all of its advantages.

I make do with the limitations iOS imposes on curiosity, especially since stability and security matter most in my IoT projects. While I admire the customization perks jailbreaking offers, the risks aren’t worth it in my book.
