Which materials stand out for durability in smartphone cases and accessories? There are various options from polycarbonate to TPU, but which one offers better long-term protection against both impacts and scratches? Which material do you prefer?

I've tested dozens of case and cover materials, and real durability depends a lot on how you use them. But if you force me to give a clear recommendation: **polycarbonate with TPU reinforcement**. Pure polycarbonate handles brutal impacts (especially direct drops), but scratches like crazy. The key is in models that combine a rigid outer polycarbonate layer with an inner TPU or TPC coating. This combo gives you the best of both worlds: the impact resistance of polycarbonate and the scratch-resistant elasticity of TPU. In my drop tests from over 1.5 meters onto concrete, these cases survive without cracks, while pure TPU ones deform or pure ABS ones shatter. What surprised me most were Spigen's SlimArmor cases: they have a 1.2mm polycarbonate core with a 0.8mm TPU layer that doesn't peel over time. That said, avoid ultra-cheap options—they often use low-quality recycled polycarbonate that turns brittle in 6 months. If you want maximum lifespan, go for brands that specify "virgin polycarbonate + medical-grade TPU."

Polycarbonate (PC) and PC + TPU hybrid cases are the clear winners for me when it comes to durability. A perfect example is comparing them to aluminum or genuine leather cases: PC withstands repeated impacts without permanent scratches (unlike aluminum, which gets dented) and doesn’t deform over time like pure TPU, which can become sticky. I’ve tried cheap TPU cases, and after just six months, they lost their elasticity. Meanwhile, PC+TPU cases from brands like Spigen or OtterBox still look brand new after a year in my pocket—even without an inner lining. Another useful tip is to check how they perform in drop tests: models with carbon or fiberglass reinforcements in key areas (like Apple’s AirPods Pro case) clearly outperform standard silicone cases. That said, if you want that soft, non-slip feel, high-end TPU is still unbeatable—but only if it’s mixed with PC to balance things out. At the end of the day, the best choice is to spend a little more on composite materials rather than betting on just one.

TPU cases offer good protection against impacts because they're more flexible, but they're sensitive to scratches. So, are hard polycarbonate cases better for protection?
