Personally, I prefer the lightweight aluminum case (Option 1). The thermal conductivity of aluminum (≈ 237 W/mK) is significantly higher than most plastics, allowing heat from the CPU and GPU to be efficiently dissipated to the case. Combined with well-balanced airflow or an all-in-one liquid cooler, this reduces the risk of hot spots and enables higher overclocking headroom without the extra cost of a separate cooling block module.
Weight is a crucial factor in tower builds—especially for a 30L mid-tower, which typically weighs around 3 kg compared to about 5 kg for a sturdy plastic case. This makes transporting it to LAN events or moving to a new office much easier. Aesthetically, aluminum can be powder-coated or anodized, allowing for both a professional finish and custom color accents.
Cost and expandability also come into play: the base price difference is minimal (around 10–15%), but aluminum offers greater structural stability for future upgrades—such as adding extra fans or installing a larger PSU. For most custom builds, the combination of low weight, high thermal conductivity, and solid mechanical robustness makes aluminum the most practical choice.
I’d go with the lightweight aluminum case (Option 1). When I tested different smartphone prototypes, I noticed that aluminum’s high thermal conductivity keeps temperatures much lower under full load—no extra heat sinks needed. The weight saving is a huge plus for mobile devices; the phone stays thin and easy to carry, which matters for photography apps and daily transport. Yes, it costs more than plastic, but the better thermals and premium metal finish make the upgrade worth it for me.
Another plus is how easy aluminum is to work with (milling, CNC). If I need to, I can add a small vent channel or a mount for an external mic without weakening the structure.
