Should I switch to "scream mode" when watching movies with my girlfriend, or should I just stick to the "only I can hear it" mode? Open-back headphones sound amazing, but people get annoyed when I talk to them with headphones on. With closed-back, the bass quality drops and the depth of the bass changes. Which type do you usually prefer? Can you explain why?
Headphone preference: Open/Closed/In-ear – which one do you go for?

I think both have their own charm, honestly—I use both depending on the situation. When watching movies or listening to music, open-back systems (over-ear or on-ear) give a better soundstage and the bass really hits deep, especially for those movie effects. But when I'm out in the city or explaining something to my girlfriend, I switch to closed-back systems (in-ear or closed over-ear) so I don’t disturb anyone around me.
With in-ear models, though, you always have to compromise on sound quality, it seems. That’s why I usually go for closed over-ear headphones—you get that deep bass without losing the movie experience, and you can still relax in a crowd. Plus, you don’t have to share the sound—sometimes you can just say, "Hey, listen to this!"
Man, I'm always stuck in that dilemma too. I think if you're watching the movie together and both of you want to hear it the same way, you could try compromising and using open-back headphones, and if you're in a crowded place, keep the volume down in that mode. Closed-back is great for sound quality, but if you're really watching a movie alone, I think that's better.
