In the end, a semi-transparent design comes down to choosing between "seeing the gesture but not the touchpoint" or "seeing the touchpoint but not the gesture." As I see it, these two approaches aren't even on the same path from the start.
A fully hidden physical key turns the device into a "pure screen," where user interaction relies entirely on the screen's virtual UI. This might be comfortable for low-touch scenarios like watching videos or browsing, but when it comes to heavy input, fingertips lack physical feedback, leading to finger fatigue over time and a drop in accuracy. The worst part? The rear camera or fingerprint sensor area can't be hidden, and if the screen borders aren't perfectly symmetrical, this "key-less" feel actually makes it harder for fingers to distinguish boundaries, resulting in a worse user experience.
On the flip side, the idea of wrapping physical keys in transparent material sounds cutting-edge, but the technical hurdles are high, and it often ends up as just a gimmick. Touchscreens have to compromise on light transmittance and scratch resistance, otherwise they’ll fail quickly. And if the material selection goes wrong, the button’s tactile feedback gets lost, and "ghost shadows" appear beneath the screen before the user even feels the press—this visual interference is worse than the blocking sensation from physical keys.
My advice? At least keep some essential tactile anchors, like volume or power buttons, so users instinctively know where to place their hands. Only then can the rest of the screen area be fully or semi-transparent without turning the device into an unusable "mirror."
