I'm curious about how the running lights feature on the back panel of these devices is implemented. Technically, is it an LED strip or something else? Are there sensors involved, or is it just a software-based animation? Can it be heavily tinted without affecting the camera's functionality?

I absolutely love the Light Trail on the Nothing Phones—it's one of their most signature features! The glowing trail on the back isn’t just a random LED strip; it’s a carefully designed array of ultra-thin LEDs integrated into the phone itself, not some aftermarket add-on. These LEDs aren’t just for show—they also handle notifications, charging status, or even light up in response to games. They’re tied into sensors too; the light sensor adjusts brightness based on ambient lighting, while the accelerometer tweaks the light effects based on movement. As for toning it down, you can use a dark matte film to keep the Light Trail from standing out too much, or slap on a phone case that darkens the back and hides the LEDs. When you’re in camera mode, the LEDs automatically shut off (thanks to those sensors) so they don’t mess with your recordings. I tried a dark matte film once, and it didn’t really affect functionality—just made the light effects look a little more subtle.
