Hello everyone, I have a second-hand laptop and I'm confused about its performance. I'm generally looking for a high-performance model in Xiaomi's budget category. What should I pay attention to here? Which features should be prioritized in terms of processor, display, cooling, etc.? For example, what refresh rate is considered sufficient? What can I do to prevent the case from heating up?

Hey everyone, I have almost the same problem. I bought an XCTEK Xiaomi Poco M3 laptop at a reasonable price, but it's not up to heavy tasks. The laptop worked fine at first, but when I loaded a simple design program (Photoshop), it started lagging and overheating. After a bit of research, I found out I have an Intel i5 7th gen processor, but with only 8GB of RAM and a weak integrated graphics card. I tried upgrading the RAM, and there was a big difference, but the heat is still a bit high. In short: go for an i5 +11 or i7 +11 with at least 16GB of RAM and a 120Hz+ screen, but don’t forget about cooling because Xiaomi’s slim design makes heat dissipation slow.

This budget-heavy-advertised laptop category in the "Poço" segment is truly confusing. In Xiaomi's models in this segment, as you mentioned, the most important thing is cooling. Because these laptops usually come with weak chassis designs and immediately trap heat when under load, throttling performance. So, you should focus on: for the processor, go for mobile versions like the Ryzen 7 6800H or 5800H. They offer better performance/heat distribution compared to Intel and work more efficiently with the Zen 3 architecture. But remember, despite these laptops having a base TDP of 10-15W, some models can boost up to 35-40W—if the BIOS or Windows power plan allows overclocking, be cautious. There’s also serious tension around the display. Panels below 120Hz often suffer from poor color quality and flicker issues, causing eye strain. However, Xiaomi’s cheap IPS panels can even get away with 90Hz for normal use—daily office tasks, light gaming, etc.—as long as the brightness is above 250 nits; otherwise, they’re unusable in sunlight. When it comes to refresh rates, don’t bother with 144Hz—it’s pointless on a throttled display. Anything below 100Hz is mediocre, so aim for at least 90Hz, preferably 120Hz IPS. Cooling-wise, the chassis structure matters too. Xiaomi’s laptops in this category combine thin metal bodies with weak fans, so your only option is to use a cooling pad. Also, if the BIOS has thermal throttle settings, tweak them to make the fan curve more aggressive. You might not like the fan noise, but failing to control heat could push the CPU to 95°C and drop performance by 40%. One last tip: replace the thermal paste after purchase. These laptops usually come with low-quality factory paste that doesn’t conduct heat well—switching to a high-quality thermal paste can give you a 5-10°C cooling boost.
