I've been blending live drums with electronic pads for a while now, and the trick that keeps the groove tight is locking the acoustic kit’s "feel" to the electronic grid before you even touch the mix desk. First, record the acoustic drums into a DAW and lightly quantize the transients so they align with the session tempo (usually around 1–2 ms of swing). Then export that tempo-matched audio as a reference track and send it to your drum module or sampler via MIDI clock. By feeding the same clock to both the DAW and the electronic pads, the pads will follow the exact tempo and swing you’ve already set in the acoustic part, keeping the timing rock-solid.
For balancing levels and taming mic bleed, I route the acoustic snare and kick through a dedicated bus with a light compressor (around 2:1 ratio, 30 ms attack, 100 ms release) to smooth out dynamics, then duck that bus using sidechain compression triggered by the electronic pads. This not only keeps the pads punchy but also reduces microphone bleed when the pads trigger. A simple high-pass filter on the analog drum bus (around 80 Hz) helps clean up the low end, and a gentle low-shelf boost on the pads around 150 Hz adds body without muddying the kit.
