How does microphone placement affect the sound quality of an acoustic drum kit in the studio?

I wonder how microphone placement affects the capture of different elements in an acoustic drum kit, especially toms, snare, and cymbals. Does placing the mic closer to the center give a warmer sound, or should I favor an angle to avoid unwanted resonances? What settings or tricks do you usually use to achieve a natural balance in recording? Your experience would really help me out!

I've found that moving the mic a few inches off the drum’s center and angling it slightly upward really helps capture the body without the boxy low-end that a dead-center placement can produce. For the snare, a cardioid mic placed about 6-8 inches away and tilted a bit toward the rim gives a warm crack while reducing the harsh edge of the top head. With the toms, I usually set a small-diaphragm condenser about 12 inches away, pointing at the 45-degree spot where the head and shell meet; that spot captures the punch and the resonant tone without the excessive ring that a straight-on mic tends to emphasize. For the overheads, I keep the pair a little higher than the cymbals’ apex and angle them toward the center of the kit to balance the cymbals and the kit’s core. A slight off-axis tilt helps control cymbal bleed and reduces unwanted room reflections, especially in a livelier space. I also like to add a distant room mic (around 10-12 feet back) to blend in some natural ambience—just pull it back a bit when the room gets too bright. The key is experimenting with distance and angle until the low-mids stay tight and the high-frequency sparkle doesn’t get overly harsh. Adjusting the mic’s proximity and angle, along with a gentle high-pass on the close mics, usually gives that natural, balanced drum sound I’m after.
