I own both an electric and an acoustic guitar, and I use both all the time. I prefer the electric for studio work and live performances because the effects and tonal variety make playing much more flexible. For example, you can’t get the same heavy distortion on an 808 beat with an acoustic—it’s just not possible. The acoustic, on the other hand, is perfect for playing around the house or in a small space, and thanks to its natural tone, it delivers cleaner sounds more effectively than an electric.
From a practical standpoint, you can’t take the electric everywhere because you need an amp, while the acoustic is ready to go right out of the box. But the more you play the acoustic, the more it starts to sound "off" compared to the electric’s consistent tone. In short, you can’t just pick one based on sound alone—I use both because they each have their own place.
Man, it really depends on what you're into when it comes to your best choice here. Like, if you're into metal or rock, I have no doubt you'd go electric—trying to get that "smooth" tone without effects is a nightmare. But if you're dealing with an acoustic, is the plan to grab your guitar and play everywhere you go? That’s a whole different kind of fun, honestly.
For my last gigs, I mixed both—I put a bow pedal on my electric guitar to get those "syrupy" sounds, and the acoustic wasn’t just sitting in the background either.
So, do you have a clear plan for yours? Is your guitar gonna rock out under stage lights in a marathon of rock, or are you heading to the middle of the desert to play "Wonderwall" on vacation? Because that alone can change the whole sound character.
