The sustain pedal (the right pedal) fully opens the damper mechanism; that is, even after you release the keys, all dampers (those soft felt blocks that stop the hammers from sounding the strings) stay lifted. When you press the pedal, a rod compresses the springs beneath the dampers, reducing their tension so the strings keep vibrating in the air. That’s why notes blend together and create that “flowing” harmony. The trickiest mechanical part is making sure every damper lifts at exactly the right moment and evenly; if one lags, you’ll hear a “hiss” or an unwanted muting. The una corda (the left pedal) shifts the hammers so they strike one or two strings instead of the usual three. On a classic acoustic piano, the hammers move sideways, so when you press the pedal, they only hit two or even just one string. That cuts the volume by about 30–40 % and gives the tone a warmer, softer color. Unlike the damper system, this uses a sliding bar and spring combo to nudge the hammers sideways. The most delicate part is getting the shift just right; overshoot the mark and the sound distorts or some notes won’t play at all. The sostenuto pedal (the middle one) only catches and holds the dampers of the notes you’re playing at the exact moment you press it.
