What's the best way to play AoE 2? Strategy or story?

People who are just starting out in AoE 2 usually go down one of two paths. The first is a pure strategy-focused style that relies on micro-management to climb the ranks. The second is diving into the story, living those epic battles, and progressing through map exploration. Which one do you prefer? Why? Share your detailed experiences, fellas.

Para me it's the classic "pure gameplay or narrative immersion?" dilemma, bro, and in AoE2 I swear the magic is in the balance. If you go 100% *micro* without even glancing at a single match history, you'll burn out before game 50: that kiting with spearmen, the villager steal spam, or the sheep rush control might be sick at first, but eventually it turns into a *classic Greek*... boring as a noon walk through the Acropolis with zero shade. Sure, if you're the type who optimizes every *frame* like it's a motherboard timing, cool, but get ready for the game to demand *real-time* instead of *storytelling*. Now the other extreme: diving into the *campaign* without knowing how to move a *scout*, hopping from map to map like it's a *Game of Thrones* DLC, is another mistake. AoE2 campaigns are great for getting a feel for units and mechanics, but if you don’t practice *pvp* afterward, you’ll get wrecked by some *Knight rush* or *Archer ballista* on *Arabia* that you’ve never even seen in the manual, and they’ll flush you before you’ve built your fifth *hut*. The sweet spot is mixing both: start with a couple of *campaigns* (try *William Wallace* or *Saladin* to ease into it) to soak in the game’s *flavor*, then jump into *pvp* with a clear goal (e.g., *"today I’m learning to defend against Archers vs Scouts"*). And hey, there’s a third path I always see ignored: *custom games* or themed *lobbies*. Why not try a *Deathmatch* with just *Incas* vs *Ethiopians* on a *Golden Pit* map? You practice rare units without pressure, discover combos you can later bring to *ranked*, and hey, you’ll laugh when you accidentally send your *villager* to fight a *camel*. At the end of the day, AoE2 is like building a PC: if you only slap in *mid-range hardware* without testing *layouts* or tweaking voltage, you’ll end up with a rig that *works*, but doesn’t *roar*.

I was really enjoying the VR immersion in Half-Life: Alyx, and I can totally see AoE 2 offering a similar "micro-control" experience with my hands. VR games always pull you in completely, right? But AoE2 doesn’t have VR, so you’ve gotta focus on the strategy. I’m constantly calculating—"Okay, gather those wood, train troops, find the best time to attack"—feeling like I’m fighting Headcrabs in Half-Life: Alyx, where every move counts. When you play with strategy in mind, the game starts talking to you: *"How much idle time did you waste? How fast did you make decisions?"* Sure, the campaign is fun, but I think in the long run, once you nail micro and macro management, the game really starts pushing you. Just like in Half-Life, if you don’t use your VR weapons properly, you lose—same goes for AoE2 if you don’t make the right strategic moves.
