Just discovered this classic 4X game, but the strategy part feels a bit overwhelming. Especially in the early game, I need general advice on things like which race to pick, where to place settlers, and how to position armies. What are some common strategies you guys use from the start? Like unit distribution, tech order, or what to watch out for with neighbors? Really curious to hear from experienced players!

Oh man, when I first started playing Civilization, I was completely lost too! My biggest mistake in my first game was blindly picking a "strong race" and not utilizing their advantages. Like, I chose Sumer and didn’t invest in farms, so I was constantly struggling with hunger. Later, I realized the best strategy is to place your settlers before they spread out, based on the geography. The more fertile land you have nearby, the smoother your progress. Also, early on, just like the "okay boomer" advice suggests, try to keep up diplomacy with your neighbors. In my first game, I kept going into "leave me alone" mode, and ended up having to fight hostile neighbors. Even something as simple as opening trade routes helps reduce tensions. And of course, when it comes to unit distribution, instead of mass-producing one type, mixing warriors and farmers early on works best. Once you introduce cargo units, everything gets a lot easier.
