Carry heroes, as we all know, are the players who come in late to turn the tide of battle in their favor. So, in your opinion, what are the most important traits they should possess? Is it DPS, scalability, or leadership skills that matter most? Or should the choice of carry be determined by the hero's role distribution among the team? Let's compile a list together if that sounds good.

Carry heroes in Dota 2, in my opinion, are usually the ones that scale well into the late game and directly impact the team's chances of winning. I think the most important thing is scalability—being able to exponentially increase your damage as the game progresses. For example, heroes like Morphling or Medusa invest their spells into passives, almost like getting a new kit, which really helps in carry roles. Role distribution is important too, but it makes more sense to pick a carry based on the hero's abilities. For instance, Drow Ranger is simple and scales well, but if the matchup calls for something else, you have to adapt. Supportive abilities, which I call "guidance skills," usually give the team an extra edge, but for carries, the main focus should be dealing damage. I usually keep my carry safe in the back, let the team secure objectives, and then I go in for the big plays.

Direct carry types are similar to ADC's in League, they underperform early in the game and then explode late-game, which can be a real pain. For example, if you pick up Tristana in LoL, you'll be flying around with your wings for the first 10 minutes, and by the 40th minute, you're just starting to hit people who've been dead for the past 30 seconds. The same logic applies in Dota; the key to a carry is that scalability, the ability to deal the damage you want no matter how late the game is. But don't think a carry can just rely on their "big bang" ability to save the day. In LoL, they need items like Zerstörer (which provides benefits in subsequent team fights) or in Dota, a Radiance+Butterfly combo. So, DPS is a crucial part of a carry, but it's not enough on its own. Your hero should also have abilities that complement how they explode after getting items. For instance, Phantom Assassin's "Coup de Grace" or Jhin's "Deadly Flourish" in LoL, these aren't just passive abilities or hidden skills that secure the final blow. Carries aren't the ones who avoid the final hit; they're the ones who land it!

Carry heroes' most defining trait is that as the game progresses and they gain item power, they simply "explode" in strength. The most successful carries aren't those whose power spikes are obvious, but those who can control and spread out that power over time—what we call scalability. For example, Anti-Mage can deal damage early on without waiting until the late game, or Phantom Assassin might hold her "Coup de Grace" ability to secure a key kill, showcasing how critical scalability is to a carry's effectiveness. DPS is important, of course, but it's worth remembering that carry heroes typically lack multi-target abilities. What’s expected from a carry is efficiency in eliminating a single target, which is why their passive/active abilities tend to focus on "damage output." Their utility also varies by role—true carries (cores) often have little to no utility, while offlane carries (Pos 2-3) need to understand what their team needs at each stage of the game, whether it's drawing items or positioning correctly. So, choosing a carry isn’t just about role distribution; it’s also about aligning with the team’s item plan and balancing early, mid, and late-game needs.
