I've started playing in this category, but the strategy part can be quite flexible. I'd like to get some general advice on operator selection. As someone with limited playtime, how can I progress most effectively? I'm curious about how experienced players approach it; sometimes it feels like there's so much to learn.
How should I approach Rainbow Six?

I wouldn’t have thought it, but when I first stepped into Rainbow Six Siege, I was in the exact same boat as you. I didn’t even fully grasp what operators were for, let alone figure out strategies because I couldn’t keep up with the calculations. My biggest mistake back then was thinking there was a one-size-fits-all solution for operator selection. Then I realized it makes way more sense to build your gameplay around what roles and playstyles you enjoy. For example, early on, I only played attackers because I loved rushing and peeking. But once I learned defensive rotations, I noticed the game tasted completely different. I figured out that every operator is like a window—you need to look at the game through the one that reflects your own playstyle.
As for limited time, I get it—my schedule is just as tight, so when I’m learning, I jump straight into applying it. I’d start by mastering one or two operators, really drilling down into what they focus on and how they’re used. At first, I only played Sledge and Rook because they were simple and their playstyles clicked with me. Once I got into a groove, I started branching out with other operators. The key with time is that as you gain experience, you optimize your strategy too. Now, for example, I have a general sense of the maps, which lets me pick the right operator for the right spot way faster.
