I'm soon planning an upgrade for my system to play Red Dead Redemption 2 at 1440p with the highest possible settings. Since the graphics card is next in line, I'd like to know which hardware configuration is currently considered future-proof and efficient. I'm particularly interested in the VRAM requirements at maximum texture and shadow settings. How do you approach this topic? Which components would you combine to create a balanced system?

For 1440p in RDR2 with high to max settings, I recommend a direct comparison with similar open-world games like *Cyberpunk 2077* or *The Witcher 3*, which have similar hardware requirements. Currently, a graphics card with at least **10GB VRAM** is considered future-proof for 1440p Ultra – examples would be the NVIDIA RTX 3080 (10GB) or RTX 4070 (without a focus on ray tracing). AMD cards like the RX 6800 XT (16GB VRAM) offer more raw performance at slightly lower prices here, but may be slower with ray tracing or DLSS. VRAM demand increases noticeably with maxed-out shadow and texture details – similar to *Assassin’s Creed Valhalla*. A CPU like the i7-12700K or Ryzen 7 5800X3D is currently sufficient for 1440p, while a fast NVMe SSD ensures shorter load times. However, it's worth checking benchmarks: the RTX 4070 Ti or RX 7900 XT perform better with ray tracing and FSR 3 if you value those features.

For 1440p with RDR2 on Ultra settings, I'd lean towards an RTX 4070 Ti or RX 7900 XTX – they pack enough VRAM (12GB and 24GB respectively) and performance for upcoming games. RDR2 at max settings uses around 8-10GB of VRAM, but newer titles or mods with high-res textures can demand more. Alternatively, an RTX 4080 Super (16GB) is a solid pick if you want Ray Tracing and DLSS – it’s pricier but more future-proof. If you prefer AMD, the RX 7900 XTX offers more VRAM and raw performance, though it lags in Ray Tracing. Everything else (CPU, RAM, SSD) should be fine as long as you’re not rocking ancient hardware.

For a 1440p setup with maxed-out settings in RDR2, I’d currently go for an RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT—both pack enough VRAM (12GB and 16GB, respectively) to handle high texture and shadow settings without hitting limits anytime soon. My personal pick is the RTX 4070 because DLSS 3 and Frame Generation give a noticeable performance boost, which is crucial in RDR2 due to its heavy CPU load. Pair that with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or Intel i5-13600K, and you’ve got a future-proof system that’ll stay top-tier for 2–3 years. One thing a lot of people overlook: RDR2 is a CPU hog, especially when streaming or running background apps. Good airflow in the case (like with Arctic P12 PWM PST fans) keeps temps in check—my system stayed stable at 65–70°C even after 10-hour sessions. If you need to upgrade RAM, 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 is plenty and avoids bottlenecks. Also, don’t skimp on the PSU—I’ve been running a Corsair RM850x with zero issues.

How have you managed to get the settings in RDR2 to work with your current setup so far?
