What is a "segment split" in speedrunning, and how do you measure it correctly?

Have any of you heard of the "segment split" concept in speedrunning? It's a method used to measure section transitions, keep personal competition fair, and compare global rankings. How are splits determined, how are timings recorded, and what precautions are taken to reduce the risk of cheating? In your opinion, what is the most reliable practice or method? I look forward to your thoughts.

When I first attempted a full-speed run of *Diablo IV*, I used LiveSplit for segment splits. I set each key checkpoint—like defeating the first boss, entering a new area, or completing an important story trigger—as a split point, dividing them based on clear in-game cues or fixed map locations. This ensured every segment had a clear start and end. For timing, I synced LiveSplit with OBS’s screenshot feature to log split times in real-time and embed timestamps in recordings. This way, even during replays, I could verify the splits, drastically reducing errors and the chance of cheating. To prevent manual interference, I added a 0.5-second buffer before and after each split, ensuring the timer only started after the actual event trigger. I also set LiveSplit to auto-save every 5 seconds to avoid data loss from crashes. Overall, pairing LiveSplit with OBS’s dual recording is the most reliable and user-friendly method—it captures split times precisely while providing solid evidence to verify segment authenticity.
