Hey guys, what's the most practical way to organize growing local film collections in digital format? Any experiences with metadata, file naming standards, or third-party tools? How do you measure the efficiency of the systems you're using?

File naming is the most critical step because once you name things properly, searching/filtering becomes a lot easier. I usually use the format `[Year]_[Producer/Uploader]_[Movie Title]_[Extra Info]` – for example *"2023_JohnDoe_RetroFuturism_DirectorCut"*. The year goes first because I constantly need it for chronological filtering. For Turkish movies I add a “TR” tag, e.g., *"1975_Yesilçam_TR_SuperFilm"*. With this system I can reach the file I want by typing just one word. When it comes to metadata, MediaInfo and ExifTool are the most reliable tools. MediaInfo’s GUI is simple, but ExifTool’s command‑line flexibility can pull out every detail you can’t see under the file – codec, bitrate, colour profile, etc. You might run into Turkish character issues, so it’s a good idea to keep your filenames limited to ASCII characters. To measure efficiency you test metadata‑reading times against the total number of files in your collection – for instance, MediaInfo extracting all metadata for 5,000 movies in an average of 3–4 seconds is considered reasonable. If you want more, media servers like Plex or Jellyfin can batch‑optimize metadata and make it searchable in their databases.
