What's the most effective way to train linemen for in-season strength gains?

How do you structure in-season strength programs for linemen? Do you prioritize heavy low-rep power lifts, focus on moderate-volume work with speed emphasis, or blend both in a hybrid scheme that includes conditioning? Share which approach you favor and why you think it delivers the best on-field performance. Also, consider how recovery and mobility work fit into your plan.

When it comes to in-season linemen work, I prefer a hybrid model that keeps the heavy, low-rep power lifts in the program but reduces the volume and pairs them with speed-oriented work on the same day. A typical week might look like Monday and Thursday for the classic 3×3–5×5 max effort moves (bench, squat, deadlift variations) kept under 70% of the lineman’s seasonal max so you stay fresh, while Tuesday and Friday get 4–6 sets of 3–5 reps at 55–60% with a focus on bar speed and explosive hip drive. Adding short, high-intensity kettlebell or sled circuits between sets helps maintain conditioning without sacrificing strength. Recovery and mobility are the non-negotiables that keep the hybrid approach viable. I schedule daily 10-minute mobility blocks—hip flexor stretches, thoracic rotations, and ankle dorsiflexion drills—right after the warm-up, and I push an active recovery session (light biking or pool work) on the off-day. The goal is to preserve joint health and reduce the typical in-season soreness that can derail a lineman’s power output. What about this scenario? How do you handle the inevitable “game-day fatigue” when a lineman’s workload spikes in the week leading up to a big matchup? Do you dial back the speed work and lean more on the heavy lifts, or do you switch to a pure recovery week to keep his explosiveness intact?
