I tried a program that combined the same weight training for both 100m and 400m because I thought young sprinters could develop explosive power and speed-endurance simultaneously. For the first 3 months, I focused on plyometrics and sprint work for the 100m, but also added basic strength movements like deadlifts (30-40kg), squats, and power cleans twice a week. As a result, my explosive power increased by 12%, but my 400m times still suffered from fatigue buildup in the last 100m. Well, when I switched to 400m, I realized I couldn’t neglect the endurance side. After that, I split my training: one day for high-intensity sprints + short interval work (30-60s), and another for tempo runs and lactate-clearance drills. I kept the strength training at the same level but reduced the sets and reps so that muscle fatigue didn’t interfere with speed endurance. This helped reduce the "closing" issue in the last 100m of my 400m by 8%. I think the most sustainable approach for young sprinters is to maintain the shared base strength between the two distances while adding specific conditioning based on the race demands. So, build explosive power as your foundation, but definitely include aerobic and lactate-clearance work for the 400m. This balance reduces injury risk in the long run and boosts performance in both distances. If you structure your training around this "strength-speed-endurance" triangle, you’ll see balanced progress in both 100m and 400m.
