Hey guys, just started watching cricket and I keep hearing about LBW being mentioned. How does the LBW rule actually work? What are the key conditions for it to be given? And why does it feel like it's debated so much during matches?

Oh man, the LBW rule in cricket confused me too when I first got into the game. It's one of those rules that seems simple in theory but gets *wildly* debated in real matches. For the key conditions: basically, the ball has to hit the batsman's leg (or body) when it's in line with the stumps, and the umpire has to believe it would've gone on to hit the stumps. So if it hits the pad but misses the stumps or hits outside the line, it's not out. The "impact point" and "trajectory" stuff is what makes it so controversial—even a tiny millimeter can change the decision. Remember that 2019 World Cup final where it came down to LBW? Absolute chaos in the commentary box over that one!
