The VAR (Video Assistant Referee) has been used in the Premier League since 2019 to assist referees with crucial decisions. It comes into play during goal situations, penalties, direct red cards, and mistaken identity cases. The VAR assistants review footage from the VAR room and communicate with the on-field referee, who can then reconsider the decision. What do you think are the advantages and limitations of this system in the English league?

In one of the Russian league matches where I played in midfield, we had to wait nearly five minutes while VAR checked a controversial penalty. On one hand, the system saved our team from a wrong decision: the referee initially ruled that the ball had fully crossed the goal line, but the video footage showed the opponent was in an offside position. After reviewing it, we got a free kick that led to a goal and changed the game’s course. This is definitely a clear example of how VAR can improve fairness and reduce human error in critical situations. However, I’ve also noticed its limitations: long pauses disrupt the match’s flow and sometimes frustrate both fans and players. Plus, ambiguous footage—like marginal offsides or minor touches—often leads to disagreements when the referee and VAR assistant interpret it differently. Ultimately, VAR in the Premier League, just like in our league, ensures more accurate decisions but requires a quick and clear protocol to minimize delays and disputes.
