I combine my cardio sessions with very specific strength blocks: twice a week, I do 8-12 minute interval climbs at near-threshold pace, followed immediately by weighted squats (3x6-8) and core work (side plank and hollow hold). This combo lets me maintain aerobic endurance without sacrificing the power needed for long climbs. On road training days, I schedule a 1-2 hour "simulation run" with pace changes and low-position pedaling drills to condition my body for real terrain demands. Before each stage, I spend 20-30 minutes reviewing the roadbook: I highlight critical points (surface changes, tight turns, fog zones) and mentally map the race line on a small map. This helps me anticipate pacing and decide where to push or ease off without losing time. During competition, I maintain a cadence of 70-80 rpm on flat sections and drop to 55-60 rpm on pure climbs, monitoring heart rate with a chest strap.
