I also prefer the hybrid model when working with most teams. Functional movements boost our core strength, minimizing imbalance while breaking down opponents' blocks. At the same time, set/competition-based tactical drills are essential for matching game tempo. Combining these two systems reduces injury risk while keeping motivation high.
But what about young players with low fitness levels? Are they only measured by functional training? Well, in that case, their tactical awareness won’t develop, and decision-making during matches becomes harder. So, focusing solely on functional training might push technical and tactical intelligence to the backseat in the long run. Balancing this depends entirely on the coach’s in-game observation and planning.
I think we can maximize the benefits of both worlds by dedicating one day entirely to functional training, another to traditional tactics, and a third to a hybrid approach in the weekly schedule. This way, players become both physically resilient and better at reading the game—leading to inevitable long-term performance gains.
