I'd like to share an experience I had with layer thickness affecting my printing process. Initially, I used 0.2mm layer height and was happy with the balance between speed and decent print quality. However, when I started printing more detailed parts, especially gears, I ran into issues – small gaps between teeth and rough surfaces in areas that needed precision. Then I switched to 0.1mm, and the quality improved significantly, but each print took over 4 hours. This put me in a dilemma: practicality or perfect detail?
Eventually, I settled on 0.15mm. It’s not as perfect as 0.1mm, but it’s faster than 0.2mm. Print times were cut in half, supports were easier to remove because less material was used, reducing the risk of breakage. Also, clogs in my FDM printer’s nozzle decreased – with thinner layers, the melt didn’t flow as evenly, causing heating issues. Ultimately, each layer height has its own balance; it depends on what you need. If you're working on prototypes, 0.2mm is fine. If detail is crucial, go for 0.1mm. If you're in between, 0.15mm saves the day in most cases.
