If I were to compare it to a photo, a high layer thickness (e.g., 0.3mm) would be like a low-resolution digital image; it’s like a painting made with broad brushstrokes—edges are rough, and details are lost. The thinner the layer (e.g., 0.1mm), the more layers stack up, resulting in finer details and smoother surfaces. It’s like a high-resolution photo: the thinner the layer, the sharper the print. In terms of time, thinner layers require the print head to travel more distance and extrude more plastic—just like constantly switching brushes when painting a detailed picture. For example, a 0.1mm layer height can increase print time by 60-80% compared to 0.3mm. Material consumption is also directly tied to this: thinner layers mean more filament is used due to the higher extrusion rate. For large-volume prints, this difference can become a significant cost factor. So, what’s ideal? In practice, 0.2mm works well as a middle ground for most prints. If high detail is needed (e.g., for toy figures), you can go as low as 0.1mm, but be prepared for longer print times and higher filament consumption. Conversely, for functional parts or rapid prototyping, 0.25mm or 0.3mm makes more sense.
