Currently, there are different 3D printing technologies available on the market: FDM (plastic is extruded layer by layer), SLA (photopolymer curing with a laser), and SLS (powder printing with laser sintering). Yep, I’ve been in the same boat and went with FDM for budget, ease of maintenance, and print quality. Especially kit models like the Prusa i3 Mk4 can be set up in 150–200 $ range, and swapping filament takes just a couple of minutes; maintenance is basically nozzle and extruder cleaning. With the right settings (0.1–0.2 mm layer height, PETG or PLA) you get pretty smooth parts—good enough for prototypes and functional pieces. SLA does have amazing surface finish, but resin changes, cleanup, and odor can be a hassle in a home setup; SLS is also pricey and the powder cleanup isn’t ideal for a small workshop. So if you’re on a tight budget and want simple upkeep, FDM is the way to go.

For a home workshop where the main criteria are cost-effectiveness and ease of maintenance, I usually go with an FDM printer. I already have two of these on my desk (Prusa i3 MK3S+ and Creality Ender 3 V2)—they’re a fraction of the price of SLA or SLS systems, and the materials (PLA/ABS) are easy to find at any store. With proper calibration, you get decent accuracy—around 0.1 mm—which is perfect for prototypes, mechanical parts, and small decorative items. If surface finish and tiny, complex geometries are more important, I’ll sometimes use a small SLA printer (like the Elegoo Mars 2). But the maintenance (mixing solvents, keeping it shielded from light) adds extra hassle and costs. So, given the budget and low maintenance needs, I’d recommend starting with FDM and only considering SLA as an additional tool when higher quality is needed.

A couple of years ago, I switched printers because my previous cheap FDM kept jamming with filament, and the detail quality just wasn’t cutting it for small mechanical parts. I did some research and went with a desktop SLA (resin) printer instead. The upfront cost was higher than an FDM, but the maintenance was way simpler—just clean the build plate and swap out resin, no constant nozzle clogs or calibration headaches. Plus, the print resolution is so much better, letting me print fine gears and brackets without excessive post-processing. In my home workshop, where budget’s tight but quality matters, the SLA has been the best choice.
