I'm just starting out with 3D printers and I'm wondering whether to choose an open-filament (DIY-style) model or a closed resin system. Filament printers seem more affordable and offer more material freedom, but they require more calibration. Resin printers, on the other hand, promise better precision and smoother finishes, while being more demanding in terms of safety and post-processing. What do you think are the most decisive criteria for a beginner? Do you think the learning curve justifies jumping straight into resin, or is it better to stick with filament? For a beginner, choosing between open-filament and closed-resin printers mainly depends on what you want to print and how much maintenance you're willing to handle. DIY FDM (filament) printers are usually cheaper, the material (PLA, PETG, etc.) is low-toxicity, and cleanup is just removing supports and leftover filament. However, they require bed leveling, temperature adjustments, and sometimes re-tensioning belts—great practice if you enjoy tinkering and understanding mechanics. Resin printers (SLA/DLP) deliver much higher resolution and smoother surfaces, perfect for detailed figurines, precise mechanical parts, or prototypes where tight tolerances matter. The main downside is handling light-sensitive resin, which needs a well-ventilated space, gloves, and post-curing under UV. Consumables are pricier, and build volumes are often smaller, but the printing process itself is nearly automatic—just load the resin, start the job, and let the machine do the rest. In practice, if your budget is tight and you want to experiment with different materials (PLA, TPU, wood, etc.) while learning to tune a machine, an open FDM printer is the better fit. If you're aiming for highly detailed prints, comfortable with safety precautions, and can invest more in consumables, a closed resin printer will save you time and deliver better quality.
