Let me see, this is a topic that immediately reminds me of my last project: a custom PC case insert for my motherboard with an integrated cooling system. I really wanted to minimize air pockets in the rear slots, so I went with a 0.12mm layer height—back then, I thought, "More is better for the details!" The result? After 6 hours of printing, I was about to bless my printer, because every layer had its own personality, whether too hot or too cold. Then it hit me—the "compromising sliding scale" approach: I increased the layer height to 0.16mm but lowered the print temperature by 5°C and slightly sped up the movement speed. Suddenly, the wall structures were cleaner, and the surfaces smoother—all while adding only 20% more print time compared to the 0.2mm settings. Since then, I’ve been experimenting with variable layer heights per section: thinner layers for visible surfaces (like the case front) and coarser ones for internal structures. My current favorite is a mix of 0.14mm for the first 3mm base (for best adhesion) and then 0.18mm for the rest—cutting print time by 20-30% compared to fine-only settings. Practically speaking, this saves you hours of post-processing with sandpaper!

For my small printing projects, like an iPhone stand or a Raspberry Pi case, I usually start with **0.2 mm layer height and medium speed**. In the past, I experimented with 0.1 mm – it looked great, but after 3 hours of printing, my patience ran out. With 0.2 mm, I still get acceptable details, but the print time drops to around ~1.5 hours for a typical part. I also adjust the speed depending on the area: outer walls and the first layer slow, the inside can happily run at 60 mm/s. For complex parts like a fan grille, I try **0.15 mm and 50 mm/s** in critical zones, but most of the time, the middle ground works fine. My tip: with new filaments or printers, always watch the first two layers first – that’s where it’s decided whether the adhesion works or everything goes wrong.
