When choosing layer thickness, the first things to consider are the model's detail requirements and print time. Personally, I go for 0.1mm layers when printing small, fine-detail parts—it really boosts surface quality, but it doubles the print time and puts more heat on the nozzle. Yeah, filament use goes up a bit too, but I don’t notice much difference; the real issue is the nozzle getting hotter, which can cause fluctuations in filament flow.
For most hobby projects on a home printer like an Ender 3 or Prusa i3, 0.2mm is a sweet spot. It still gives decent detail (good enough for gears or cases) without adding too much time, and heat control stays more stable.
If your model doesn’t have super fine surfaces and speed matters more, bumping up to 0.25mm makes sense. But going below 0.15mm doesn’t add much benefit, and heat issues start piling up.
