A few weeks ago, I bought my first 3D printer – a Creality Ender-3 V2 because it's affordable and recommended by many beginners. As a complete newbie in the field, assembling and calibrating it turned out to be a little adventure, which I’d like to share with you.
The assembly itself was pretty straightforward, and the instructions were quite clear. However, I quickly noticed that a few things didn’t quite fit once the device was unpacked. For example, the Z-axis was slightly crooked, so the bed didn’t align evenly with the nozzle. I had to realign the two endstops and tighten the Z-screws a bit. A tip I later got from experienced members: always manually level the bed before starting your first test print.
Filament was another big topic. I initially bought white PLA because it’s easy to print and produces little odor. But after the first print, I noticed the filament on the spool was partially damp – it formed small bubbles, and the result looked like chewy gum. The advice from the community was to store the filament in a dry container with silica gel or use a small filament dryer. Since then, I’ve had hardly any issues, and the print quality has improved significantly.
Calibrating the print bed actually took the most time. I tried the automatic bed leveling, but it doesn’t work reliably on my model. Instead, I now use a piece of paper to check the distance between the nozzle and the bed at multiple points. It sounds old-fashioned, but it works perfectly – the first time I tried it, the result was a clean cube without any warping.
Another interesting experience was testing different print settings. I experimented with layer heights, print speed, and temperature. I learned that a slightly slower print speed (40 mm/s instead of 60 mm/s) and a slightly lower temperature (190°C instead of 200°C) for my PLA resulted in fewer strings and better surface quality.

When I first took my Ender-3 V2 out of the box, I thought it was almost just a hobby project. During assembly, I quickly noticed that the screws didn’t always fit perfectly—on my printer, a section of the groove was missing, causing the Z-axis to wobble slightly. I grabbed a few small metal blocks from my workshop, secured them with some epoxy resin, and tightened the screw. That fixed the issue right away and made the Z-calibration much more stable.
With my first print using PLA filament, a clog in the hot end was almost inevitable—the filament was a bit too moist, causing it to bubble when heated and block the nozzle path. I dried the filament for 24 hours in an airtight container with silica gel, and I haven’t had any clogs since. A small tip: always level the bed before starting your first test print—sliding a piece of paper under the nozzle and checking for even contact will save you a lot of frustration later. Compared to a Prusa i3 MK3S+, your Ender-3 V2 is significantly more budget-friendly, but its firmware and calibration features aren’t quite as polished. While the Prusa comes with automatic mesh bed leveling and pre-installed sensor calibration, often delivering clean results right from the first print, the Ender-3 V2 requires manual bed leveling and may need frequent adjustments—especially for beginners, which is a common source of frustration.
From my experience with mobile cameras, I’d compare it to the difference between an entry-level smartphone camera and a semi-professional mirrorless system: the basics are there, but to get consistent results, you’ll need to dive deeper into settings. If you want faster, more reliable first prints, it might be worth checking out an upgrade kit (like a BLTouch sensor) or testing another model—just like in photography, where switching from automatic modes to manual exposure and focus controls can significantly improve image quality.
Start by manually leveling the bed using a piece of paper or a uniform card, then adjust the nozzle height (Z-offset) so that the gap between the nozzle and the bed is around 0.1 mm; this prevents over-adhesion or adhesion failure. From personal experience, applying a thin layer of glue stick or painter’s tape to the bed improves adhesion, especially with PLA.
