Smart bands do claim to analyze sleep, but there's a bit of an exaggeration there; these aren't entirely "scientific" results, but they do provide useful estimates. They typically collect data along three axes: using a **motion sensor (accelerometer)** to record alternating periods of stillness, attempting to estimate REM/non-REM stages from pulse variations with a **heart rate sensor (PPG)**, and some models even incorporate **body temperature or ambient light** data. The algorithms are fairly straightforward: prolonged stillness + relatively steady heart rate = "deep sleep," frequent movement + rapid heartbeat = "awake." The accuracy rate hovers around 70-80%; so even if you get a "slept poorly" alert in the morning, the device might have recorded 4 hours of sleep with 2 hours marked as "awake." From my experience: My Xiaomi band showed around 6.5 hours of sleep out of a 7-hour night, and the deep/light sleep ratios were more "convincing" than accurate. If you're really serious about your sleep quality, **don't rely solely on band data**—how you feel when you wake up and your energy levels during the day are just as important indicators. My advice? Use the band for sleep tracking and compare the results with third-party apps like Apple Health or Sleep Cycle; at least you'll catch inconsistencies early on.
