I'm curious, how are smart home systems generally integrated? For example, what protocols are preferred for managing multiple devices over the same network? Are wireless or wired systems more stable? What are your general thoughts on the topic?
How should a smart home system be set up?

Hey man, which devices do you usually think about starting with first? Like, do you plan to start with lights or security cameras?
Many smart home projects immediately consider wireless systems, but in my opinion, wired infrastructures (such as KNX or Cat6-based) are more stable and reliable, especially in the long run. For wireless, protocols like Zigbee or Z-Wave are popular; Zigbee may seem cheap and low-energy, but it can be problematic if you have too many devices on the network. For example, in my old apartment, I tried running 30+ devices on a Zigbee network, and delays of around 2 seconds started occurring. So, I’d say, "A well-planned wired system equals long-term stability."
If you go wireless, it’s worth creating dedicated networks for IoT devices (like a dedicated VLAN and SSID for IoT) and keeping them separate from your regular Wi-Fi network. Yes, the setup is more complex, but in the end, just like cutting the power to your home, stability is everything in a system you’ll forget about once it’s done.
