I've got a project I'm stuck on—wanting to set up a smart home system but I'm overwhelmed on where to start. What components are essential vs. optional? Should I focus on sensors, lighting, security systems first? Scalability is key, so I want to plan ahead. Any general advice or a roadmap to follow? Would love to hear the community's take on this, guys.
How should I get started with a smart home system?

Buddy, I went through the exact system you're talking about last year, and man, I really overthought it at first—like, what should I set up first? I started with the basics: sensors and basic lighting, because I figured the system needs to be stable before I build the walls. For the first phase, I installed motion sensors, door/window contacts, and ambient temperature sensors. Without these, smart bulbs or thermostats wouldn’t even work properly.
As for hardware selection, ESP32-based modules are a solid start since they support both WiFi and Bluetooth, and adding sensors is easy. If you can spare some budget for the security system, IP cameras and fixed sensors make sense in the first wave, but they’re optional really.
I think the most important thing is focusing on scalability—meaning the system should be able to grow with future needs. I used Node-RED in between because it’s both simple and lets me control everything in my smart home from one place. You’re always tweaking things, right? Once you lock in the stable infrastructure, adding or removing stuff becomes way easier. If you only focus on bulbs and plugs, you might run into issues when constantly adding new things—I’ve been there. Also, don’t get hung up on brands; you can use Xiaomi’s standard since there’s a big community, and finding solutions in forums is easy when you hit a snag.
Start with a simple hub system, then expand as your needs grow. That’s what I did, and now I’ve got over 20 devices in my home, and nothing’s crashing.
