I want to smartify my home, but where do I even begin? I’m planning to integrate security, lighting, heating, and a multimedia system. I’m curious which protocols (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Thread, etc.) are more flexible and future-proof. Also, would a centralized control system or a modular approach make more sense? Any conceptual-level recommendations?
How should I set up a smart home system?

I tried Philips Hue (Wi-Fi/Thread) for wireless lighting systems and found it less stable than Zigbee-based systems—I experienced lag or connection drops. You can build a more stable setup with a modular approach (e.g., choosing all components from the same ecosystem rather than separate brands).
I'm not entirely sure which makes the most sense to start with—whether you should begin with lighting or take direct control of the heating first. What are your thoughts on this?
