Hello, I'm curious about which communication protocols are generally preferred in smart home systems. Wireless options like Z-Wave, Zigbee, and Wi-Fi are often mentioned, but there are also alternatives like LoRaWAN. What are the advantages of these protocols in terms of power consumption, local network security, and device compatibility? In which situations should each protocol be preferred?

Whenever I decided to install a smart thermostat at home, they used Z-Wave. Compared to Wi-Fi, I hardly deal with the batteries, and I can seamlessly sync it with other Z-Wave devices too. I’ve heard Zigbee is also cheap and low-power, but I’ve been considering switching to LoRaWAN to avoid losing signal from some devices on my network.
