I've found that Zigbee is just as robust in wireless protocols as wired ones like Z-Wave or KNX, thanks to its low power consumption and mesh networking. When I switched from my old Android setup, where I constantly juggled devices, to an iPhone, things got simpler with HomeKit integration and Apple’s support for the Matter protocol. For example, I set up Philips Hue lighting with Zigbee, and when I added a HomePod as a gateway, it synced with my Apple TV, allowing voice commands. As for security, wired systems are tougher against hacking but come with high installation costs—I only have wiring in a few rooms, the rest runs on Zigbee nodes. If it’s comfort vs. energy, I’m leaning toward comfort for now; sensors adjust lighting automatically based on ambient light, so it’s both cozy and avoids unnecessary energy waste. Either way, the key is that the system can grow—I’m in my second year, tweaking and expanding it bit by bit instead of rewiring the whole apartment from scratch.

The protocol choice in gateway-centric systems directly impacts the system's stability and scalability. Wired protocols (Ethernet, KNX, Modbus) are reliable and low-latency, but their installation costs are high. In wireless options, Zigbee and Z-Wave offer low power consumption and interoperability between devices, making them particularly popular for lighting and sensors. This way, you can easily transition the lighting from a nightlight to an evening atmosphere without worrying about gateways or wiring. For me, comfort and security are clear priorities: security is always the top criterion. To mitigate risks like burglary or fire, I started with smart locks and smoke detectors (such as Aqara or Xiaomi systems) before moving on to lighting and device control. Now, I've expanded my system with a gateway hub, and my preference is for Zigbee (Xiaomi/Aqara) + Z-Wave protocols. Why? Zigbee is ideal for low-power, long-lasting devices like sensors and buttons, while Z-Wave offers more reliable signal stability in homes with thick walls. Compared to Wi-Fi, these protocols have less latency and minimize battery health and network load issues since they communicate directly with the gateway. For wired options, KNX is ideal if you're looking for professional-level automation, but I steered clear of it due to the installation difficulty and cost for beginners.
