How reliable are voice command systems in home automation? For example, when I say "Turn on the lights," does the system respond instantly, or are there delays? Is there a risk of interference between devices sharing the same network, meaning could wrong commands get triggered? How practical are they for everyday use?

If you don't have a constant connection—whether it's fiber, cable, ADSL, or 5G—even local voice commands won't work properly. For example, Google Home has things like "Fast Pair" or "Google Fast Routines" for local commands, but those only activate when you're connected to Wi-Fi. If the power or internet goes out and you're stuck trying to control your automated systems manually with your phone, then a smart home only makes sense on paper. In my experience, voice assistants are only reliable if you have a stable connection on your network. If they're plugged into a power strip, speaker, or heater, when the power and internet go out, they're as good as dead. Honestly, I once tried telling Alexa to "turn on the lights" when the power went out, and she didn't even respond. So if offline scenarios matter to you, maybe smart plugs with their own buttons or local panel systems make more sense.

I tested this with a Raspberry Pi and a voice module, at first the latency was a bit annoying but with a good Wi-Fi connection and short commands it becomes smooth. On the other hand, yeah, I had the issue where my cat triggered a playlist because it made a noise near the mic… to avoid if you have noisy pets!

It really depends on which assistant and hardware you choose, but in general, yes—if you want “OK Google, lights on” to work the second you finish saying “on,” the system has to meet three strict requirements: microphones picking up clean audio, the tiny hot-word engine triggering immediately instead of waiting for cloud processing, and the hub (phone or mini-HD) responding fast enough that no extra buffering slows it down. Anything above 300 ms round-trip already feels like a stutter in daily use. What trips people up isn’t the pure voice-recognition accuracy (Google Home-style models are pretty solid at separating your voice from background noise these days), it’s the network rules. If your router throttles multicasts, Chromecasts and dumb Zigbee bridges start flooding the air with discovery packets every time you say “living room lights.” One stray broadcast packet on the same SSID can wake every sleeping device and cause the hub to receive an echo of its own command before it’s even finished processing the real one. Result: lights flicker twice or a different bulb you didn’t mention turns on. Quick fix? VLAN off the assistants onto a guest network so they only “see” the devices they’re supposed to talk to. Practical takeaway: if you’re in a studio flat, a single Nest Hub Mini on the same 5 GHz band as two smart bulbs works fine. In a three-bed house with 20 Zigbee devices, split the network into two VLANs (IoT and LAN), force the hub to talk only over Wi-Fi Direct to the Matter bridge, and turn off the microphone’s default “Hey Google” always-listening mode overnight. Then the latency drops to the 180–220 ms range most people forget they’re experiencing.
