I'm still learning mobile development, but I believe the main issue with smart home systems isn't the interfaces, but rather the compatibility problems between different brands. For example, I have three different brands of light bulbs at home and I have to control each one through a separate app. A standardized API or common protocol technology could make this much simpler.
