I've been using a smart home with local control for two years now and I'm very happy with it. My setup is based on Home Assistant with a Raspberry Pi as the central unit—all data stays within my own network and isn't sent to the cloud. This not only reduces dependency on external providers but also gives me full control over my privacy. If anyone is new to this topic, a good starting point would be a router with ad-blocking functionality (e.g., Pi-hole) combined with a local IoT hub. This way, I not only block ads but also unwanted data transmissions from many devices right at the source. Investing in a few Raspberry Pis or NAS systems is worth it—the security and speed of local processing are simply unbeatable.

The whole thing strongly reminds me of the rise of cloud services in the early 2010s. Back then, convenience was the main focus, while most users only later realized how much control they had handed over to tech giants. Smart home systems with local data processing—such as Home Assistant or OpenHAB—offer a similar solution today as Nextcloud or Synology NAS did back then compared to Dropbox or Google Drive: full data sovereignty through self-hosting, but with more setup effort and maintenance requirements. The only difference is that we now have a more mature IoT landscape. A locally run system like Home Assistant can now be operated almost as conveniently as a commercial solution, while the security risks from decentralization are lower. Just as early cloud opponents argued that sensitive data should remain within their own four walls, more and more users today are reclaiming their smart home intelligence—even if it comes with technical hurdles.

Last month when I installed a new smart thermostat, the first thing I did was check the device's local network settings. I was surprised to find that the manufacturer made cloud connectivity mandatory, and the option for local data processing was buried in the fine print. While testing it in my bedroom, I was shocked to learn that my voice commands were being sent to servers in another country. Fortunately, with my neighbor's recommendation, I switched to an open-source alternative, and all my data stayed on my home's local network. I can definitely relate to concerns about smart speakers with their microphones left on at night. Similarly, a friend of mine had a camera-enabled device in their home that accidentally recorded their neighbors, highlighting a serious security flaw with this technology. Even though IoT devices make our lives easier, experiences like these have taught me to be cautious about privacy concerns.

I've personally thought a lot about data privacy, especially with smart devices in the home constantly recording. After starting home automation last year, I decided to use a local hub – currently using Synology’s DiskStation as a NAS to see how much data is stored in my system. This way, photos, audio recordings, and sensor data stay on my home network and aren’t sent to the cloud. As for benefits, here’s a direct tip: If you use devices that can process locally, isolate them with VPN and network segmentation (VLAN). For example, I put my IP cameras on a separate VLAN and only allow local access. There are risks, of course, but when you keep control of your data, the convenience of a smart home is unmatched.
