I started replacing regular bulbs with Zigbee-enabled smart lights in my apartment to build a proper mesh network without overloading my Wi-Fi. For the first room, I went with Philips Hue E27 bulbs that have built-in light sensors. I connected them to my Hue hub, which was already linked to my router. On top of that, I added a separate Aqara MTR-02 motion sensor (also Zigbee-based) that triggers hallway lights—it turns them on for 10 minutes when movement is detected and then fades them out smoothly. The most critical part was hub placement. I tucked it inside a closet near the router to avoid dead zones and ensure a strong mesh signal. When setting up the bulbs, they initially tried to connect to Wi-Fi, but once I switched them to Zigbee, they worked flawlessly without any lag. Scheduling lights via the app turned out to be way more convenient than using separate remotes, and Alexa voice control works perfectly since the hub is already integrated into the ecosystem.
