Is the color temperature control in smart bulbs usually done with RGB+White (RGBW) LED arrays? Is it operated through color mixing or is there another method? How important is calibration in this system, for example? Why do serious differences occur between the results of different brands?

RGBW LEDs are actually the standard solution in most smart bulbs, but they don't all work the same way, bro. A typical RGBW setup includes 3 RGB LEDs (red, green, blue) and 1 or 2 cool white LEDs. To adjust color temperature, they use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) – meaning the light's intensity and color are controlled by how long the LEDs stay on or off. Mixing RGB colors gives you tones between 3200K-6500K, while the white LEDs provide a clean cool white in the 4000K-5000K range. For example, Philips Hue’s RGBW bulbs aim for more natural yellows and pinks, while Xiaomi Mi LED’s basic RGBW set just does a simple mix. That’s where the differences between brands come into play. Calibration is the real key here, though. To get the right color temperature, you gotta measure the actual light spectrum the LEDs produce. Cheap bulbs often skip calibration, so an LED set to 4000K might actually be 4300K. Mixing it with halogen bulbs at 2700K or the bluish tint of cheap RGBW white LEDs throws off the perception even more. You gotta check the Luminous Efficacy and Color Rendering Index (CRI) values – if they’re above 80, the colors look more natural. LIFX bulbs even have a built-in light sensor to measure ambient light and adjust the color temperature accordingly. On the flip side, cheap Chinese knockoffs often don’t even measure the light spectrum – they just stick to PWM, leading to color shifts.

Most smart bulbs adjust color temperature not by mixing RGB colors with white LEDs, but by continuously blending "warm white" LEDs (close to a heated tungsten filament) with "cool white" LEDs (similar to daylight) — much like the "color temperature" method used in some camera flashes. For example, Philips Hue uses a white LED array with a secondary heating electrode, supplemented by a cool blue-filtered LED; this is the basis of their "Tunable White" system. The biggest difference between brands lies in color calibration: Philips calibrates the light spectrum of each bulb individually, offering a smooth transition from 2200K to 6500K, whereas a cheap Chinese bulb from the market might have no calibration at all or factory tolerances that deviate by several hundred Kelvins. A similar gap exists in photography between cheap LED panels and professional bi-color panels — the cheap ones always have green-red tint shifts.

Even if my first thought was "that bulb looks cool," I realized the topic is awesome 😄 RGBW definitely works there, but the calibration from different brands is like metro shawarma—everyone's similar, but the taste is different 🌭 As for me, I'm still choosing my smartphone so I can at least understand calibration on the phone 😅
