Let's start with the basics—there are three simple ways anyone can use smart lights: 1) Directly via an app on your smartphone (available on all of them), 2) Voice assistants like Google Assistant or Alexa (mostly compatible), and 3) Automations, like setting a command like “turn on the living room light at 7 PM.” I personally love voice commands during breaks; we can even play MP3s I’ve uploaded to my Synology’s nano FTP with a simple voice command. But if you want reliability, setting up basic “IFTTT” scenarios in the automation panel is the safest bet.
On the networking side, Wi-Fi is the easiest option since it plugs directly into the outlet and works right away. However, Zigbee and Thread (the backbone of Matter) are more reliable in apartments with heavy wireless traffic and offer much better battery life. My home uses Thread-enabled Philips Hue lights, and even the wireless button responds instantly 24/7—it’s the latest model. Bottom line: Wi-Fi is great for starting out at home, but when setting up a larger group of lights, I switch to Thread.
