Jo, I was just messing around with some Xiaomi Yeelight (Wi-Fi) and Philips Hue (Zigbee) lights last week, so here’s what I’ve picked up. Wi-Fi is the most common in low-cost bulbs (Yeelight, TP-Link Tapo) because you don’t need an extra hub—just connect directly to the router and you’re done. But they hog bandwidth, and if your network’s dealing with 4-5 smart devices at once, you know the drill: the light takes ages to respond or just drops out. Bluetooth (like some basic Chinese bulbs) is handy because it doesn’t clog the network, but the range is a pain—if you’re more than 10 meters away or there are thick walls, say goodbye to control. Zigbee and Thread are the kings of low-power: they sip energy, handle multiple bulbs without bogging down Wi-Fi, and hubs (like Hue’s) can manage up to 50 devices without breaking a sweat. The catch? You need that bridge, so the price ticks up a bit. If you want something simple and cheap, a Wi-Fi bulb works fine. But if you’re setting up a system with 10 lights and want stability, Zigbee with a decent hub is the way to go. For example, I’ve got Yeelights in areas with fewer connected devices, and they’re lightning-fast, but the bedroom’s on Zigbee with an Aqara hub—zero lag, and you forget they’re even there.
