Well, last winter I replaced all the LED bulbs in my living room with smart bulbs (Zigbee-compatible). At first, I was hopeful that the electricity bill would be reduced by 30% as advertised, so I set up schedules and motion sensor integration. As a result, the lights automatically switch to a dimmer mode when no one is in the room, and I did see a real reduction in power usage by about 15%. However, the sensor sensitivity was too high—it would turn the lights on just from my pet walking by, and on the other hand, it would get too dim if someone was sitting quietly, straining my eyes. While cloud-based control is convenient, network instability caused delays in app responses, making me want to switch back to manual switches at times. In the end, I settled on just manual on/off and scheduled lighting with lower sensitivity, which balanced comfort and energy savings for me. *Real usage data was calculated from household power meter readings and smart plug consumption history.

Many systems report light levels to the cloud for decisions, meaning a lost internet connection can leave lamps uncontrollable. Personally, I prefer a hub that works locally; it cuts latency to nearly zero and minimizes data leak risks. Another way to look at it: smart lights should be judged by their use case. If you automate lighting based on frequent movement, you’ll see real energy savings. But paying extra just for color-changing or basic scheduling feels overkill. Bottom line: without the right sensors and solid local control, most of these "smart" promises are just marketing fluff.
