When comparing Smart Light with traditional lighting systems, the main difference lies in connection reliability. Traditional systems are 100% stable, but obviously lack automation and remote control features. With WiFi or Zigbee, stability heavily depends on your infrastructure: a router with poor WiFi coverage or a poorly placed Zigbee hub can cause latency issues or occasional disconnections. From my experience, Zigbee tends to be more stable long-term because it uses a mesh network, while WiFi can get saturated if you have many connected devices.
In terms of security, local systems (LAN) without cloud synchronization have the upper hand. For example, a system based on Home Assistant with Zigbee devices using AES-128 encryption is nearly unbreakable for the average home user. On the other hand, cloud-based solutions may have vulnerabilities if the manufacturer doesn’t update its firmware or if their server is attacked (though this is rare with reputable brands). That said, the peace of mind of not relying on the internet comes at a cost: the initial setup is usually more technical.
I've found Zigbee systems to be more stable than WiFi in situations where WiFi degrades, especially when the system operates locally. That's why I switched my home lights to Zigbee, and I haven't experienced any network issues in over a year. Cloud-based systems are naturally riskier since server problems can affect the entire setup.
