Hey there! Last year, I set up a small home lighting system and started looking into how smart bulbs communicate. Generally, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is preferred—like Philips Hue systems connect directly to the home Wi-Fi network or communicate via a hub, bro. There’s also this Zigbee wireless protocol that stands out for its low power consumption, but it needs a hub.
I tried Li-Fi, but it was a bit of a hassle—imagine data transmission through constant flickering of light, and you need a receiver sensor. The advantage is no electromagnetic interference, but it can be problematic in harsh shadows or if the light isn’t directly hitting the sensor. Security-wise, if it’s connected to Wi-Fi, it’s a bit risky—I’d recommend mesh networks or VLANs. Zigbee, on the other hand, barely caused any interference at home; my neighbor’s Wi-Fi didn’t even affect it.
